CAROSELLO, CAROSELLA,
CAROSELLI

ORIGIN OF THE NAME:

From a brand of wheat . . . to a medieval tournament . . . to a merry-go-round . . . to a wild party-in-the-streets.

In ancient times, carosello had usage to designate a premium brand of wheat grown in what is now the Abruzzo and Molise Regions of the Italian peninsula (remote wheat growing areas that remained very feudal until even 100 years ago). In the Italian language, Caro and Cara mean of a high price, dear, or beloved.
The guess is that after the Fall harvest, these wheat farmers would open their lands to sponsor tournaments
so carosello came to be used as a nickname for a kind of tournament. As Rome expanded and spread its romance language, the Italian word garosello became also a Spanish word carosella (both meaning “little war” or “tournament”). In the 1100s, the word found usage by the crusaders to describe a game played by Turkish and Arabian horsemen. The crusaders brought the game back to Europe, where it developed into a pageantry-filled medieval jousting tournament. A highlight of the carrousel (French version of the word) was the ring-tilt, in which Knights, on horseback and in all their regalia, would attempt to spear suspended rings at full gallop (aka: tilt--“at full force”). The first real “merry-go-round” carousel (Anglicized version of the word) was built around 1680 as a circular training device for the ring-tilt event. And, later evolved to a amusement ride for children attending the tournaments –– where the kids would ride on wooden horses and reach out to grab for the ring, just like the Knights did.

Caroselli (masculine plural noun usage of carosello) could be used to describe a large multi-event tournament, or the clan as a whole. In the Calabrese dialect it simply means money box (an obvious offshoot of the tournament prize).
In Italy during the early days of television (1957-1977),
caroselli was used to describe a block of TV ads (by law, TV shows would run w/o commercial interruption and the ads would run late at night) that was interspersed by sketch comedy— these shows became immensely popular. Of late, the word caroselli has become infamous. It is now used to describe a crazy street party where ‘cars go in circles’ — exactly the kind of wild celebrations seen all over Italy after ITALIA Azzurri Futbol (soccer) team won the World Cup in 2004. “The mayor has said that if Italy wins tonight he will send out a battalion of police patrol cars to prevent citizens doing the infamous caroselli, ie. driving madly around in a flurry of flags and horns that brings chaos to the entire city. ”
